How do I change a flat tire on an E - trike?

Dec 05, 2025

As a supplier of E - trikes, I understand that encountering a flat tire on an E - trike can be a frustrating experience for riders. However, with the right knowledge and tools, changing a flat tire on an E - trike can be a relatively straightforward process. In this blog, I'll guide you through the steps to change a flat tire on an E - trike, sharing my expertise as an industry professional.

Step 1: Gather the Necessary Tools

Before you start changing the flat tire, you need to gather the right tools. These typically include a tire lever, a wrench (the size depends on your E - trike's wheel nuts), a spare tube, and a pump. Make sure your spare tube is the correct size for your E - trike's tire. You can usually find the size information printed on the sidewall of the existing tire.

Step 2: Find a Safe Location

Safety should always be your top priority. Park your E - trike on a flat, stable surface away from traffic. If possible, use a kickstand or prop the E - trike up securely to prevent it from tipping over while you're working on the tire.

Step 3: Remove the Wheel

Use the appropriate wrench to loosen the wheel nuts. Depending on your E - trike's design, you may have quick - release levers or traditional nuts. If it's a quick - release lever, simply open it to loosen the wheel. For nuts, turn the wrench counter - clockwise to loosen them. Once the nuts are loose, carefully remove the wheel from the E - trike.

Step 4: Deflate the Flat Tire

Use the valve tool or the edge of a tire lever to press down on the valve stem and release all the air from the flat tire. This will make it easier to remove the tire from the rim.

Step 5: Remove the Tire from the Rim

Insert the tire lever between the tire and the rim at a point away from the valve stem. Gently pry the tire over the rim. Work your way around the tire, using one or more tire levers as needed. Be careful not to damage the inner tube or the rim while doing this. Once one side of the tire is off the rim, you can usually pull the rest of the tire and the inner tube out by hand.

Step 6: Inspect the Inner Tube and Tire

Take a close look at the inner tube to find the puncture. You can do this by inflating the tube slightly and listening for the hissing sound of escaping air or by submerging the tube in water and looking for bubbles. Also, check the inside of the tire for any sharp objects, such as glass or nails, that may have caused the puncture. Remove any foreign objects you find.

Step 7: Replace the Inner Tube

If you've found a puncture in the inner tube, it's best to replace it with a new one. Carefully place the new inner tube inside the tire, making sure the valve stem goes through the hole in the rim. Start by fitting one side of the tire back onto the rim. Work your way around the tire, pressing it onto the rim. Use the tire lever to help you if necessary, but be gentle to avoid pinching the new tube.

Step 8: Inflate the New Inner Tube

Once the tire is back on the rim, use a pump to inflate the inner tube. Check the recommended tire pressure on the sidewall of the tire and inflate the tube to that pressure. You can use a pressure gauge to ensure you're inflating it correctly.

Step 9: Reinstall the Wheel

Place the wheel back onto the E - trike. Align the wheel with the axle and tighten the wheel nuts or close the quick - release lever. Make sure the wheel is securely attached and doesn't wobble.

Step 10: Check the Tire

Give the tire a final visual inspection to make sure it's properly seated on the rim and that there are no signs of damage. Spin the wheel to check for any unevenness or rubbing.
